Master's program »No Doubt: About Decisions« Hochschule Mainz
Master thesis DESIGN UND DEMOKRATIE
In recent years, tendencies can be identified that could endanger democracy. DESIGN AND DEMOCRACY shows what role design plays in this development.
One thing is certain: a lot can be done to improve democracy and make it more crisis-proof. It is not perfect – but this very changeability is its great advantage. It thrives on constant change in order to survive into the future.
Design plays a formative role in society today – consciously or unconsciously. Especially in these turbulent times, I would like to make the connection between design and democracy visible and show which positions design can take for active improvement.
As many design creators as possible should therefore be confronted with the project. Through flyers and an Instagram profile, designers who are not already experts on the topic, who are not aware of the role of design in democracy, or who understand their work as non-political, should be made aware of the potential impact of their work, or even motivated to take a stand.
Design is a creating discipline and has the potential to change things – positively or negatively – with the right attitude. We should do our part to make democracy fit for the future, so that it can cope with the threats and challenges.
